Last Friday, a massive flashing “X” sign was installed atop a well-known building in San Francisco, serving as Twitter’s main office, without obtaining permission from the city authorities for investigation.

According to the Associated Press, the city initiated an investigation last week, stating that the company failed to obtain necessary permits for the installation, following design and safety protocols.

Patrick Hannan, the spokesperson for the Building Inspection Department, had previously mentioned that obtaining permission was essential to ensure harmony with the building’s historic nature and to guarantee the safety of the sign’s installation.

Hannan explained to the Associated Press that even for adding signage to a building, a permit is required.

On Monday, San Francisco police officers hindered the removal of the bird logo from the platform, stating that any part of the sign or any other item falling could jeopardize pedestrian safety.

The change comes after Twitter acquired the familiar platform named “Mask” for 44 billion dollars last year, and the bird logo underwent rebranding into “X,” which was revealed at the top of Twitter’s desktop version on Monday.

In a series of posts about the platform’s rebranding, Twitter’s CEO, Linda Yaccarino, mentioned that “X” will transform Twitter into a global town square, centering on limitless interactivity for audio, video, messaging, and payments/banking – creating a worldwide marketplace for ideas, products, services, and opportunities.

Yaccarino, who is also known as “Mask” in his personal and professional life, has frequently used the letter “X” in his ventures. He is the CEO of SpaceX, the famous space exploration technology corporation. He founded X.com in the 1990s, which is now known as PayPal.

The “X” sign’s location is at the heart of San Francisco, situated just a few blocks away from City Hall, in a residential building directly owned by the company, as social media users pointed out.

Videos of the sign showcase it brilliantly flashing, visible from the streets below.

It remains to be seen how Twitter’s rebranding into “X” will resonate with its users, but it promises a future of boundless interactivity that aligns with our imaginations.
