Highest-Level U.S. Military Response to Unprecedented Hamas Assault on Israel

On Sunday, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin made a significant announcement regarding the deployment of American military assets in response to an unprecedented, multi-front attack on Israel by Hamas in the eastern Mediterranean.

In a news release, Austin stated, “Today, in response to the Hamas attack on Israel and following extensive discussions with President Biden, I have authorized several measures to enhance the Department of Defense’s presence in the region, thereby reinforcing regional deterrence efforts.”

One notable action is the dispatch of the USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group, which includes the world’s largest warship, the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier, along with the Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser USS Normandy and four Arleigh-Burke-class guided missile destroyers: USS Thomas Hudner, USS Ramage, USS Carney, and USS Roosevelt. The USS Gerald R. Ford, initially positioned in the western Mediterranean, received orders for its deployment, which may involve covering over a thousand miles depending on its current location.

In addition to the naval deployment, Austin also revealed plans to augment U.S. Air Force fighter aircraft squadrons in the region. These USAF aircraft will be stationed at bases in the Middle East, where they will be poised for potential operations related to Iran.

To facilitate the delivery of munitions, the U.S. is conducting airlift operations.

Austin held a conversation with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on Sunday to express support for Israel and obtain updates on their efforts to restore security and safety amid the Hamas attack. They pledged to maintain close communication in the days and weeks ahead.

Shortly thereafter, the White House confirmed that President Biden had engaged in another conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. They discussed Hamas’ taking of Israeli hostages, with President Biden assuring Netanyahu of U.S. assistance for the Israel Defense Forces, with more aid forthcoming.

The White House emphasized that there is no justification for terrorism, calling for global unity against such brutal acts. President Biden also briefed Prime Minister Netanyahu on intensive diplomatic efforts by the United States over the past 24 hours in support of Israel.

Austin confirmed that the initial shipment of U.S. security aid to the IDF would commence on Sunday, with further deliveries expected in the coming days. He expressed commitment to working closely with Israeli counterparts to ensure they have the necessary resources to protect their citizens and defend against these heinous terrorist attacks.

CBS News reported that, as of Sunday, at least 600 Israeli civilians and military personnel had lost their lives, with another 1,800 individuals sustaining injuries as a result of the Hamas attack that began in Gaza early on Saturday. Many Israelis, both civilians and security forces, have been taken hostage. Israeli Ambassador Michael Herzog indicated on “Face the Nation” that there may be Americans among the hostages, though details were lacking. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken acknowledged on the same program that the U.S. was investigating reports of American hostages.

At present, there is no comprehensive plan in place for the evacuation of American citizens, as per U.S. officials. Meanwhile, the Gaza Ministry of Health reported that 370 Palestinians had lost their lives, with 2,200 sustaining injuries as of Sunday.
