Tragic Shooting of Two Teens by NY Deputy in Syracuse Suburb: Developing Investigation

In a tragic and fast-moving incident, a New York deputy investigating a series of burglaries in the Syracuse suburb of Dewitt ended up fatally shooting two teenagers who were inside a vehicle. The deputy, whose identity remains undisclosed, believed that the vehicle was about to run him over, leading him to fire three shots into the car. Onondaga County Sheriff Tobias Shelley provided details of the encounter, which occurred around dawn.

The deputy had been responding to a call shortly before 6:30 a.m. regarding suspicious activity involving people transferring items between two vehicles. He closely followed one of these vehicles, which attempted to flee in reverse, trapping the deputy in a narrow space. In a desperate attempt to protect himself, the deputy discharged his weapon, leaving him with no other apparent options, according to Sheriff Shelley.

Notably, the deputy did not activate his body camera during the incident. However, a resident captured the shooting on video, though this footage has not yet been released to the public.

Following the shooting, the vehicle involved was discovered on a Syracuse street, over a mile away from the scene. Tragically, one individual was declared dead at the scene, while the other succumbed to their injuries at a local hospital. The New York Attorney General’s office, responsible for investigating deaths involving police officers, is currently looking into the incident. The identities and ages of the deceased teenagers have not been officially confirmed, pending further investigation.

Furthermore, a third person believed to have been in the vehicle during the shooting remains at large, while the second vehicle present at the scene managed to flee and has yet to be located. Both of these vehicles had been reported as stolen.

In response to the incident, the deputy involved has been placed on paid administrative leave, a standard procedure following the use of lethal force by a law enforcement officer. New York Attorney General Letitia James has initiated a thorough investigation into the tragic double slaying.

This heartbreaking incident has unfolded against the backdrop of a series of thefts in the area, beginning with the theft of two vehicles on Tuesday night in Syracuse. These stolen vehicles were later connected to two separate burglaries at smoke shops in Oneida and suburban Syracuse on the following Wednesday.

As more information becomes available, this developing story will continue to be closely monitored by both local authorities and the public.
