CMPD investigating deadly shooting involving security guard at transit center

A private security guard’s fatal shooting near Uptown transit prompts police investigation.

In a tragic incident that occurred near the Uptown transit center in Charlotte, a private security guard shot and killed a person, prompting an ongoing investigation by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. The incident unfolded around 12:30 a.m. on a Friday when a distressing 911 call reported an assault with a deadly weapon on East Fourth Street, close to the Charlotte Transportation Center. This location is in proximity to what was once the EpiCentre, now rebranded as the Queen City Quarter.

According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD), uniformed security personnel from Allied Security Services encountered an individual near the transit center during the late-night incident. Feeling threatened by the situation, one of the security employees discharged their firearm, resulting in the tragic death of the victim, later identified as 24-year-old Kashaune Lavonne Teal. MEDIC personnel who arrived at the scene confirmed the victim’s demise.

During the investigation, a firearm was recovered at the scene, although it remains unclear who the firearm belonged to. The key question at the heart of this incident is whether the use of deadly force by the security guard was justified, which hinges on several factors stipulated by state law. Guards are permitted to react with force only when they are faced with imminent danger, are not instigating the confrontation, the surrounding environment plays a role in the assessment of threat, and the use of excessive force is strictly prohibited.

CMPD has indicated that the security guard perceived a deadly threat in this situation. While they have not yet disclosed the specifics of the perceived threat, this detail is expected to be a crucial factor in determining whether the security guard will face charges.

Despite this unfortunate and tragic event, CMPD has reassured the public that the transit center remains a safe place for those who may need to use it on any given day. Maj. J.D. Thomas emphasized the commitment to security, stating, “It’s a safe place. This is an unfortunate, tragic event, but the officers are out here, CATS is serious about security.”

As the police continue their homicide investigation into this incident, they are urging anyone with information to come forward. You can reach out to Detective Lyon, the lead investigator, at 704-432-TIPS. Information can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or by using their online reporting option.

In the wake of this incident, the community remains in search of answers and closure, as authorities work diligently to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting and whether it was indeed a justified use of force by the private security guard.
