Tragedy Strikes Ayuterra Resort in Bali as Elevator Plunges into Ravine, Claiming Five Lives

In a heartbreaking incident that has left the world stunned, an Instagram-famous glass elevator at Ayuterra Resort in Kedewatan, Ubud, Bali, turned into a scene of unimaginable horror on Friday. Five dedicated resort workers lost their lives when the elevator they were riding suddenly plummeted 300 feet into a ravine, as reported by local sources.

The victims of this devastating elevator accident were identified as Sang Putu Bayu Adi Krisna (19), I Wayan Aries Setiawan (23), Ni Luh Supernigsih (20), Kadek Hardiyanti (24), and Kadek Yanti Pradewi (19). These young souls were simply doing their jobs, unaware of the tragic fate awaiting them.

The calamity occurred around 1 p.m. when the elevator’s cable snapped, sending shockwaves throughout the tranquil resort. Ubud Police Commissioner Made Uder, shedding light on the unfortunate incident, explained that the cable wasn’t strong enough to support the elevator’s considerable weight.

With a heavy heart, he lamented, “The steel swing rope lacked the strength to hoist the considerable weight upward, and regrettably, the safety wedge or brake failed to engage, resulting in a rapid descent of the elevator. This tragic accident was unavoidable.” “The five elevator users passed away as a consequence.”

Police are investigating the accident at Ayuterra Resort in Ubud.

The Bali Deputy Governor, Cok Ace, who also chairs the Hotel and Restaurant Association Bali, expressed his concern and revealed that he had personally reviewed the hotel’s safety documents. “”This is the first time that this has occurred, and if we take a quick look, I noticed the permits, in particular regarding the use and safety of work, regarding the condition of the lift,” he said. He added that, “From a routine inspection, one independent consultant said that in November 2022 [it was fine], and it has only been 8 months since they stated that it is still [safe] so of course this will be included in the investigation.”

The elevator in question served both the dedicated staff and esteemed guests, shuttling them between the upper levels of the hotel and the resort facilities nestled on the lower grounds. It was meant to provide convenience and a picturesque view, but it tragically became a vehicle of catastrophe.

In the aftermath of this horrific accident, guests staying at the resort have been relocated to alternative accommodations while authorities conduct a thorough investigation. The resort’s owner, Linggawati Utomo, has vowed to cover the funeral expenses for the five workers who tragically lost their lives in the line of duty.

This devastating incident serves as a somber reminder of the importance of regular safety checks and maintenance, particularly when dealing with equipment that carries the lives of individuals. As the investigation continues, our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of the victims, and we hope that measures will be taken to ensure such a tragedy is never repeated.
