Tragedy Strikes Morocco: Over 1,000 Lives Lost in Devastating Earthquake

A powerful earthquake, measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, has shaken central Morocco, leaving a devastating impact in its wake. This natural disaster has claimed the lives of at least 1,000 people, with many more injured and extensive damage reported across various areas. The temblor’s epicenter was situated in the High Atlas Mountains, approximately 71 kilometers (44 miles) southwest of the vibrant city of Marrakech, occurring at a depth of 18.5 kilometers, according to the US Geological Survey.

The calamity struck at 23:11 local time, followed by a 4.9-magnitude aftershock just 19 minutes later, intensifying the already dire situation. The repercussions of this disaster were felt not only in Marrakech but also in several areas to the south, as reported by Morocco’s interior ministry.

Tragically, many of the victims are believed to be in remote, hard-to-reach locations, making rescue and relief efforts all the more challenging. The interior ministry has released information indicating that casualties occurred in the provinces and municipalities of al-Haouz, Marrakech, Ouarzazate, Azilal, Chichaoua, and Taroudant. Additionally, they have reported that over 600 people have sustained injuries, with some in critical condition.

In the immediate aftermath, people were advised by the Moroccan government not to return to their homes, fearing further devastating aftershocks. Consequently, many individuals spent a harrowing night outdoors, seeking safety.

The hospitals in Marrakech have been inundated with injured individuals, leading authorities to issue a plea for blood donations to cope with the overwhelming demand. Reports have also emerged of families trapped under the rubble of their homes in the city, and parts of the Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, have sustained damage. Witnesses have described the heart-wrenching sight of some buildings collapsing, although specific locations have not yet been confirmed.

The historic Kutubiyya mosque in Marrakech, a renowned tourist attraction near the city’s main square, was surrounded by dust in the aftermath of the quake, further emphasizing the severity of the situation.

Survivors recounted their terrifying experiences, with one man describing the sensation of a “violent tremor” and witnessing “buildings moving.” The panic was palpable, with children crying and parents overwhelmed by distress. During the initial moments, power and phone lines were disrupted, compounding the chaos.

The quake’s epicenter, nestled in a remote region of the High Atlas Mountains, had a relatively shallow depth, and its tremors were reportedly felt in the capital city, Rabat, located approximately 350 kilometers away. Other affected areas included Casablanca and Essaouira. In these remote mountain villages near the epicenter, simple structures may not have withstood the quake’s force, making it challenging to assess the full extent of casualties in those areas.
