Russian forces attacked the town of Shyroka Balka in southern Ukraine, killing a family, their 23-day-old infant, and their 12-year-old son.

An unfortunate incident involving shelling in the southern Kherson region of Ukraine has resulted in the tragic loss of seven lives, which includes a 23-day-old infant. Additionally, twenty individuals sustained injuries due to this distressing event, prompting local authorities to declare a day of mourning.

In the preceding November, Kyiv successfully reclaimed a portion of Kherson from Russian occupation. However, despite this territorial change, Russian troops positioned on the opposite bank of the Dnipro River have persisted in bombarding the regional capital and its environs.

Tragedy struck the village of Shyroka Balka, leading to the untimely demise of a couple, their recently born baby, and another individual. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko revealed that the 12-year-old son of the couple suffered critical injuries and eventually succumbed while undergoing medical treatment.

Minister Klymenko conveyed his sentiments regarding the matter through a Telegram post, stating, “The terrorists will never willingly stop killing civilians. The terrorists must be stopped. With force. They don’t understand anything else.”

Adjacent to Shyroka Balka, the village of Stanislav also bore the brunt of this shelling, resulting in the loss of two lives, including a church pastor, as reported by Governor Oleksandr Prokudin.

Furthermore, casualties were documented in Kherson city and the town of Beryslav, where three individuals from each location sustained injuries. Reports from the interior ministry indicated that settlements across the region, including Veletenske, Zolota Balka, Komyshany, and Shyroka Balka, were impacted by these attacks.

In a different sector of the conflict zone, Ukrainian military officials announced that their forces had achieved progress against Russian troops in southern Ukraine. They claimed some success near a significant village in the Zaporizhia region. The strategically vital Robotyne area in the Zaporizhia region, which is a stronghold under Russian control, witnessed what the Ukrainian General Staff termed as “partial success.” Regaining control over this area holds importance for Ukraine’s continued advancement toward Melitopol in the south.

General Oleksandr Tarnavskyi, the commander of Ukraine’s southern forces, remarked, “There are liberated territories. The defense troops are working,” referring to developments on the southern front.

Recent weeks have seen battles unfold across various points along the extensive 1,000-kilometer front line. Ukraine’s counteroffensive, backed by Western-supplied weaponry and troops trained by Western experts, aims to regain control from Russian forces that invaded the region nearly 18 months ago. Despite these efforts, the progress made by Ukrainian troops has been gradual since the launch of the counteroffensive in early June.

On a separate note, Russian officials reported the downing of three drones over the Belgorod region and one over the neighboring Kursk region. These areas share borders with Ukraine. Instances of Ukrainian drone strikes targeting Russian border regions have been relatively frequent. Such strikes, penetrating deeper into Russian territory, have witnessed an uptick since the destruction of a drone over the Kremlin in early May.
