Late-Night Freeway Tragedy in Tempe Claims One Life and Leaves Another Injured

It was a somber Saturday night in Tempe when a tragic accident unfolded on the Loop 202 Red Mountain freeway near Scottsdale Road around 9:30 p.m.

This harrowing incident involved a rear-end collision that resulted in one fatality and left another individual injured.

According to the dedicated troopers from the Department of Public Safety, the initial cause of the chaos was a car stopped on the freeway, likely due to a prior collision. However, this unfortunate situation took a turn for the worse when another driver rear-ended the vehicle that was immobile on the road. The impact was severe, leading to a dire situation.

The consequences were heart-wrenching. Both occupants of the stopped car had to be rushed to the hospital for immediate medical attention. Tragically, one of the individuals did not survive the ordeal, succumbing to their injuries. The other person, while fortunate to have survived, was hospitalized with minor injuries.

In the aftermath of this calamity, the westbound lanes of the freeway had to be shut down for a significant portion of the night. However, the tireless efforts of emergency personnel allowed them to reopen the lanes shortly before 1 a.m. on Sunday.

As of now, the victim’s name has not been released, adding a layer of sadness to this already devastating event.
