Washington Governor Jay Inslee took swift action on Saturday, responding to a relentless wildfire wreaking havoc in Spokane County.
The devastating blaze has already claimed one life and obliterated more than 185 structures, prompting Inslee to issue an emergency proclamation.
In a heartfelt video message posted late on Saturday, Governor Inslee expressed his gratitude for the extraordinary efforts of the first responders working tirelessly to combat the flames in a united front. He urged everyone to take a moment to express their appreciation for these heroes. Inslee emphasized that safeguarding lives remains the top priority, underscoring the importance of this collective mission.
Having personally communicated with Mayor Terri Cooper of Medical Lake, Mayor Chris Grover of Cheney, and Sheriff John Nowels, Governor Inslee assured the public that the state is rallying all possible resources to confront this crisis. He pledged an unwavering commitment to aiding in every conceivable manner.
As of Sunday morning, the Gray Fire had swept across a staggering 10,892 acres and unfortunately, containment remained at 0 percent, as reported by the Washington State Department of Natural Resources. The intensity of the fire forced the closure of a crucial interstate highway, I-90, spanning from Sprague to Geiser.
According to Isabelle Hoygaard, spokesperson for Washington’s Department of Natural Resources, the blaze ignited shortly after midday on Friday on the western outskirts of Medical Lake, just about 15 miles west of Spokane. The fire rapidly escalated in scope, as detailed by the Associated Press.
This dire situation has necessitated evacuation orders for certain areas of the county. Governor Inslee and the state’s Department of Natural Resources have united their efforts, leaving no stone unturned to address the disaster at hand.
