Giant Sinkhole Shuts Down Fillmore and Green Intersection in San Francisco

Massive sinkhole forms in San Francisco’s Pacific Heights after water main break

San Francisco Water Main Break Chaos:

SAN FRANCISCO — A water main break wreaked havoc in San Francisco’s charming Cow Hollow neighborhood, causing quite a splash as it flooded local businesses and gave birth to a mammoth sinkhole at the intersection of Fillmore and Green Streets this Monday.

This unexpected situation unfolded on Fillmore Street, specifically between the intersections of Green and Union Streets, sending shockwaves through the Cow Hollow and Pacific Heights communities. The trouble began late Sunday evening when a water main suffered a catastrophic rupture, unleashing a torrent of water, mud, and debris that inundated Fillmore and Union Streets, a dramatic scene captured and shared on social media.

As Monday morning dawned, the San Francisco Police and the Department of Public Works sprung into action at the intersection of Fillmore and Green Streets, where a sizable sinkhole had made its presence felt. To tackle the challenging task at hand, heavy equipment was promptly mobilized to the site.

San Francisco Public Utilities Commission’s Twitter account chimed in on Monday morning, confirming the unfortunate incident: “A 16-inch water main break was reported at Union and Fillmore Streets” on Sunday, just before the clock struck midnight.

Swiftly responding to the crisis, SFPUC crews worked tirelessly through the night to stabilize the situation, as conveyed in their tweet.

The culprit behind this watery spectacle was none other than an aging cast iron water main dating all the way back to 1949. Officials noted that the damage extended to an adjacent 8″ water main, causing intermittent water supply and temporary service interruptions for the residents in the vicinity.

In a surprising twist, repair efforts had to be momentarily halted later in the afternoon when PG&E crews arrived on the scene to address a gas main within the affected work area. Once PG&E completes their work, SFPUC crews will swiftly resume their repairs on the water mains.

As the repair crews continue to toil diligently on the sinkhole and water main, residents and onlookers are strongly urged to steer clear of the affected area for their safety. It’s an ongoing saga in the heart of San Francisco’s Cow Hollow, but with the dedication of these diligent crews, it’s only a matter of time before the situation is fully under control and life returns to normal for the affected businesses and residents.
