Pittsburgh police evacuate homes near an ongoing active shooter scene after officials tried to evict a resident

A sheriff’s sergeant found himself injured amidst a chaotic and ongoing shooting situation that unfolded in the peaceful Garfield neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Officials provided details about the incident, revealing that the situation had escalated into what they described as an “extremely active” scene.

The genesis of the turmoil can be traced back to earlier in the day when personnel from our Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office attempted to carry out an eviction notice. However, the routine task took a perilous turn when the resident of the property responded with a burst of gunfire, as shared by Mike Manko, a spokesperson from the Sheriff’s Office. Remarkably, one of our sergeants who was leading the operation managed to escape unharmed, suffering only a minor injury unrelated to gunfire while evading the shots.

Active shooter situation underway in Pittsburgh

The area quickly turned into a tumultuous setting, with police rushing to evacuate neighboring residents and urging the general public to steer clear of the vicinity. In a timely tweet, Pittsburgh Public Safety cautioned citizens: “Please avoid the 4800 block of Broad Street and N. Mathilda Street in the Garfield neighborhood due to an active shooting situation.” As time passed, the situation escalated further, prompting officers to initiate evacuations from homes in the affected block.

Amidst the chaos, a resident living across the street from the shooting scene recounted a terrifying ordeal. Her house bore the evidence of the violence, now adorned with bullet holes. Recounting the harrowing events, she mentioned how authorities knocked on a nearby door, which was followed by a burst of gunfire as they entered. The resulting barrage of bullets propelled her into a state of panic, seeking refuge in her basement to escape the perilously close shots.

As the standoff unfolded and the tense atmosphere persisted, authorities worked tirelessly to ensure the safety of everyone involved. Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Rocco Gagliardi emphasized the importance of evacuating the area, especially those who were caught inside their houses during the tumultuous morning. He stressed their commitment to resolving the situation in the safest possible manner.

Despite the ongoing chaos, authorities refrained from publicly disclosing the identity of the suspect at the center of this turmoil. It was confirmed that only one suspect was involved in the incident, according to Mike Manko. While the FBI offered its assistance to the local authorities, the primary control of the scene remained under the Pittsburgh police department’s jurisdiction. The baton of investigation would subsequently be passed on to the Pennsylvania State Police once the situation was brought under control.

As the hours stretched on, the community remained on edge, hoping for a swift and peaceful resolution to this unprecedented crisis in their typically quiet neighborhood.
