The Philadelphia police officer involved in the tragic incident last month, where Eddie Irizarry Jr. lost his life, has now surrendered to authorities. Mark Dial, the officer facing a slew of charges including murder, voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, simple assault, reckless endangerment of another person, and official oppression, turned himself in on Friday morning.
The shocking turn of events was announced by Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner during a press conference. Krasner also presented unedited body camera footage from the incident, emphasizing that the videos “speak for themselves.”
Initially, the police had claimed that Irizarry had been outside his car and was shot after allegedly lunging at the officers with a knife. However, two days later, the department admitted that Irizarry had been shot while sitting inside his vehicle. Irizarry’s family released security camera footage that vividly depicted the tragic moment when Dial fired the fatal shots, just moments after stepping out of his cruiser.
As a result of the incident, Dial had already been suspended for a period of 30 days. The city’s police commissioner at the time, Danielle Outlaw, who has since left her position, announced on August 23 that an administrative investigation had revealed Dial’s violation of department rules for “insubordination.” Allegedly, he had refused to follow “proper orders from a superior officer.” The administrative investigation also accused Dial of “conduct unbecoming” an officer for his “failure to cooperate in any departmental investigation.”
The Fraternal Order of Police, the union representing Philadelphia police officers, had declared its unwavering support for Dial in the wake of the incident.
“Officer Dial has the full support of the Fraternal Order of Police, and we continue to review the facts and circumstances surrounding this tragic incident,” expressed Dial’s attorney, Fortunato N. Perri Jr., in a statement to the press last month.
This turn of events highlights the gravity of the situation and the immense public interest it has generated.
