In a heart-wrenching incident, an 18-month-old girl tragically lost her life due to a gunshot wound to the head at 2 Ranwood Lane in Palm Coast, just moments before midnight on Sunday. This devastating incident has prompted a thorough investigation by the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, alongside two other agencies, as the community grapples with this unimaginable loss.

The Palm Coast Fire Department swiftly responded to a distress call about a gunshot wound involving a child, arriving on the scene just 20 minutes before midnight. Their immediate response and efforts were nothing short of heroic, as they worked tirelessly to stabilize the young victim. Palm Coast Fire Chief Kyle Berryhill revealed that the little girl was subsequently transported by ground to Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach. Chief Berryhill explained, “We’d have to have been actively performing life-saving measures for her to be transported.”

Considering the gravity of the situation, there was a contemplation of calling in an emergency helicopter for transportation. However, Chief Berryhill explained, “Based on the condition of the patient,” it was decided that “going by ground immediately was the better option, in accordance with our protocols.”

At the scene, the dedicated teams from Ladder 25 and Rescue 22, consisting of five paramedics, provided crucial life-saving measures before assisting in the child’s transportation. Tragically, despite their valiant efforts, the child was pronounced deceased upon arrival at Halifax Hospital, as confirmed by a spokesperson from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.

The initial reports indicated that this heartbreaking incident may have been accidental. Still, it is essential to note that this has not been officially confirmed, as the sheriff’s spokesperson emphasized, “It’s possible that it was accidental, that’s what they were reporting originally when they got the call, but not confirmed it was accidental.” To uncover the full truth behind this devastating event, investigators from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Crime Scene Investigation unit, in collaboration with the State Attorney’s Office, are actively supporting the sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit during the ongoing investigation.

The residence at 2 Ranwood Lane in Palm Coast, where this tragedy unfolded, is a rental property located in the R-Section of Palm Coast. On the night of the incident, all six residents of the house were present. There didn’t appear to be any social event taking place at that time, according to the sheriff’s spokesperson. The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office took to Facebook in the early hours of the morning to assure the public, stating, “There is a large law enforcement presence on Ranwood Lane in Palm Coast. There is no danger to the public.”

During the investigation, authorities recovered one weapon from the house. This devastating incident has undoubtedly left the community shaken, and the Flagler County Sheriff, Rick Staly, is scheduled to hold a press conference at 1 p.m. to provide updates and address the concerned community members.

This heartbreaking event reminds us all of the fragility of life and serves as a sobering reminder to prioritize safety in our homes and communities. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family affected by this tragedy, and we hope that the investigation will shed light on the circumstances surrounding this devastating incident.
