‘Dark feeling’: Students stunned by yet another death at NC State, this one outside Sullivan Hall

A Tragic Loss: NC State Mourns the Passing of a Student.

In a heartbreaking incident, an NC State student tragically lost their life outside of Sullivan Residence Hall on a somber Monday afternoon. The entire campus community was left in shock and sorrow as the news of this untimely demise spread like wildfire.

The NC State Police have officially confirmed the tragic incident but have chosen not to provide further details regarding the cause of death. This leaves many unanswered questions looming over the campus, with the cause of this devastating loss still under investigation.

This heart-wrenching event adds to the string of unfortunate losses that the Wolfpack family has had to endure, especially after the previous school year, which saw the loss of 14 students, seven of whom succumbed to the tragic reality of suicide. It’s a heavy burden that the campus community carries, and it underscores the pressing need for increased mental health support and resources.

For students returning from a holiday weekend, the sight of a medical examiner’s van and crime-scene technicians from CCBI outside the campus dorm was both shocking and unsettling. One student, Matthew Davis, living in Sullivan Residence Hall, shared his feelings, saying, “It gave me this dark feeling. That could be somebody I know. It could be anybody.” Davis, a student, couldn’t help but think about how fleeting life is and how this experience has caused him to view things differently.

The news left many students like April Anderson, also a resident of Sullivan Residence Hall, grappling with a profound sense of sadness. “I was just getting back into the swing of things, preparing for school tomorrow, but then that’s when I heard. That’s when I heard. And I was really sad about that.” she said. The suddenness of the tragedy weighed heavily on everyone who calls the campus home.

Ethan Slick, a senior at NC State, discovered the news from friends, rather than official channels, the following day, highlighting the need for improved communication during such difficult times.

NC State Chancellor Randy Woodson issued a heartfelt statement, acknowledging the deep pain felt within the campus community. He shared, “It’s with sadness that I write to share the news of a death in our community.

Jordan Nance, a business major, expressed the collective confusion and emotional turmoil that many students were experiencing, saying, “What did they do? I have no answers. It was very emotional. That’s all I can say, I don’t know. I don’t know what to do though.” The sense of helplessness and grief was palpable.

On a more positive note, the university has taken steps to address the mental health concerns of its students. Engineering major Pierce Latta acknowledged the efforts made by the university, stating, “They did a lot. They made it really clear they’re here and we have the resources we need. It’s just sad.” He also emphasized the importance of a strong support network and faith in staying grounded during these challenging times.

In an effort to provide better mental health support, the university has increased the number of mental health clinicians available on campus. This school year, an additional 15 clinicians have been added, bringing the total to 50.

As the investigation into this tragic loss continues, the campus community must come together to support one another and emphasize the importance of mental health resources. The passing of an NC State student outside Sullivan Residence Hall serves as a stark reminder of the need for open dialogue, compassion, and a commitment to creating a safer and more supportive environment for all members of the Wolfpack family.
