Harrowing Crossfire: Unpacking the North Nashville School Bus Shooting

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A troubling incident shook the North Nashville community earlier this month when a school bus came under fire, leaving a teenager and a child injured. In a swift turn of events, a suspect has been taken into custody, shedding light on the shocking crossfire that occurred on 26th Avenue North in the Cumberland View neighborhood on September 11.

The Metro Nashville Police Department was quick to respond, investigating a harrowing scene where gunfire erupted as children were disembarking from a school bus. Reports indicate that the chaos unfolded as 22-year-old Sylvester Buford recklessly discharged his firearm toward the exiting kids. Adding to the mayhem, a passenger in a white Honda Accord allegedly opened fire on the group of children and Buford as the vehicle sped by.

Buford, facing a warrant related to the incident, chose to turn himself in to authorities earlier this week. He now faces three serious charges, including reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon, reckless endangerment, and reckless aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Currently, he is being held at Metro Jail on a $100,000 bond.

But the story doesn’t end there. On September 28, another arrest sent shockwaves through the community. A 17-year-old, who was present near Buford during the shootout, was apprehended near his residence in Cumberland View. This teenager, too young to be named publicly, has been charged in juvenile court with aggravated assault, two counts of reckless endangerment, and two counts of juvenile weapon possession.

The consequences of this chaotic event were dire. A 16-year-old victim was rushed to Vanderbilt Hospital with a gunshot wound to the right shoulder. It is believed that this injury resulted from Buford’s gunfire. In another distressing development, a 6-year-old child sustained a graze wound to the back and was taken to TriStar Centennial Medical Center in a private vehicle for treatment. Investigators are pointing to the 17-year-old as the one responsible for the shots that grazed the young child.

The North Nashville community has been left deeply shaken by this incident, highlighting the need for increased vigilance and safety measures, especially when it comes to our children. As the legal process unfolds, the hope is that justice will be served for the victims, and the community can begin to heal.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible firearm use and the devastating consequences that can arise from reckless actions. Authorities will undoubtedly continue their efforts to ensure the safety of North Nashville and the well-being of its residents, as they should.
