Nashville Police Pursuit: Five Teens Apprehended in Carjacking Investigation

In the early hours of a Friday morning, the peace of South Nashville near Interstate 24 was disrupted as the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) made a significant breakthrough in an ongoing investigation. Five teenage boys found themselves in police custody, suspected of being involved in a string of armed robberies that had been plaguing the Hermitage, South Nashville, and Midtown Hills precincts. The event that led to their capture involved a dramatic police chase and the recovery of a stolen black Nissan Rogue, providing a glimpse into the gritty world of teenage crime in Music City.

The incident began with the recovery of the stolen Nissan Rogue, which had been taken in a carjacking on Sunday, October 22, at an Arbor Crest Boulevard apartment complex. Detectives from the Violent Crimes Division had been hot on the trail of this vehicle since the carjacking was reported, and their diligence paid off.

As the stolen Nissan Rogue left an apartment complex in the 800 block of Murfreesboro Pike, authorities decided to deploy spike strips to thwart the escape. However, the driver of the stolen vehicle managed to evade the spike strips, turning onto Murfreesboro Pike and eventually onto Foothill Drive. While ground officers ceased their pursuit at this point, a police helicopter continued to track the rogue Nissan.

The helicopter’s relentless pursuit eventually led to the vehicle being cornered at the dead end of Foothill Drive, where the six individuals inside fled into the Shadowbluff Apartments located in the 200 block of Plus Park Boulevard. The scene unfolded with a sense of urgency, and reports of a significant police presence in the area near the I-24/I-40 split started to circulate around 3 a.m. on that fateful Friday.

To ensure the successful capture of the fleeing teens, detectives requested assistance from South Precinct patrol officers. Together, they swiftly established a perimeter, closing in on the young suspects. The police helicopter, patrol officers, and K-9 units worked in tandem to apprehend the individuals, ultimately leading to the capture of five out of the six teens involved.

During the subsequent interviews with the apprehended suspects, one of them admitted that they had discarded their firearms as they fled from the police. Detectives were able to recover two pistols and one rifle, underscoring the dangerous nature of the situation they had just defused.

The five teenagers, aged 14 to 17, faced a range of charges based on their involvement in this incident. Jesus Alvarado and Selvin Alexander-Popmac, both 15 years old, were charged with carjacking, reflecting the severity of their actions. Meanwhile, a 14-year-old and another 17-year-old were charged with joyriding and evading arrest, serving as a stark reminder of the consequences of their involvement in this criminal activity. Additional charges were pending for the remaining 17-year-old, highlighting the ongoing nature of the investigation.

This incident also shed light on a deeper issue, one that extends beyond the immediate criminal charges. When minors are taken into custody, the Department of Children’s Services custody comes into play, ensuring that their welfare and future are carefully considered. It is a complex situation that often involves collaboration between law enforcement, social services, and the judicial system to address the unique challenges posed by underage offenders.

As the five teenagers found themselves facing the consequences of their actions, legal processes began to unfold. Public defenders, representing the accused, would play a crucial role in ensuring that their rights were upheld throughout the legal proceedings. The teens would have their day in court, and the justice system would determine their fate, while also addressing the underlying issues that may have led them down this troubled path.

In the wake of this dramatic event, the community of South Nashville can breathe a sigh of relief. The MNPD’s relentless pursuit of justice has led to the capture of those responsible for a string of armed robberies, and the recovery of the stolen vehicle serves as a symbolic victory in the battle against crime. While the fate of the five teenage boys now rests in the hands of the law, the incident underscores the need for continued vigilance in maintaining the safety and security of this vibrant city. It is a stark reminder that the diligent efforts of law enforcement are essential in keeping the streets of Nashville safe and ensuring that its residents can go about their daily lives without fear.
