A Plea for Change: The NAACP’s Stance on Police Brutality and the Elijah McClain Case
NAACP President and CEO, Derrick Johnson, released a heartfelt statement in response to the conviction of Aurora Police Officer Randy Roedema for criminally negligent homicide and third-degree assault in the tragic 2019 death of Elijah McClain:
“Being a Black man in America is not a crime, and let me be crystal clear on this – no one should ever have to endure such violence simply for being Black, especially at the hands of those who took an oath to ‘serve and protect.’ We commend the jury and express our heartfelt gratitude for their unwavering commitment to ensuring justice for both the Aurora community and Elijah’s grieving family.
Many have carried the heavy burden of sorrow and grief for years now, all because Elijah McClain did not deserve to meet such a dreadful fate that fateful evening. His life serves as a stark reminder of the innocence shared by countless Black men throughout America who are unjustly targeted and subjected to harassment by law enforcement, day in and day out.
The NAACP earnestly calls upon Aurora Police Department Chief Art Acevedo to take decisive and swift action, ensuring that no other citizens of this city have to endure or witness such unwarranted force and brutality from officers ever again. This senseless behavior must come to an end here, and the first step in achieving that is for law enforcement to rebuild trust within the very communities they are sworn to protect.”
About NAACP:
The NAACP stands as a tireless advocate for the civil rights of Black Americans. Our legacy is deeply rooted in grassroots activism, championed by the great civil rights pioneers of the 20th century and carried forward by the passionate activists of the 21st century. From classrooms and courtrooms to city halls and the hallowed halls of Congress, our extensive network of members across the nation works tirelessly to secure the social and political power required to bring an end to race-based discrimination. Our commitment lies in the pursuit of a world free from racism, where Black individuals can enjoy equal opportunities in flourishing communities.
As we stand in solidarity with the pursuit of justice, we must address the humanitarian crisis of police brutality and excessive force, for it continues to plague our society. The tragic story of Elijah McClain is a stark reminder of the systemic issues that demand reform. We urge for police reforms that prohibit dangerous tactics such as carotid holds and the use of deadly force, particularly in cases where individuals are unarmed and not posing a threat to officers.
The statewide concern for these issues is paramount. Investigations must be carried out with the utmost dedication to safeguarding constitutional rights and upholding civil rights. In collaboration with police reform advocates, we must address concerns related to neck holds, excited delirium, the administration of substances like ketamine, and the use of excessive force. Felony charges, like manslaughter and second-degree assault, need to be thoroughly examined in the pursuit of justice.
The recent split verdict in the Adams County Court serves as a somber reminder of the work yet to be done. We must work tirelessly to ensure that racially biased practices are rooted out, and a comprehensive civil rights investigation into these matters is of the utmost importance.
We continue to stand with the McClain family, particularly Elijah’s mother, Sheneen McClain, as they navigate the painful journey of seeking justice for their beloved son, who was declared brain dead after the incident. A fair and equitable settlement must be reached, acknowledging the profound loss they’ve endured.
In closing, we reaffirm our commitment to fostering racial equity, encouraging civic engagement, and advocating for supportive policies and institutions that benefit all marginalized communities. Together, we strive for a world where justice prevails and where Black individuals can enjoy the same opportunities and rights as all citizens.
