GB News places Laurence Fox on suspension

GB News suspends presenter Laurence Fox

GB News has taken action to suspend host Laurence Fox following his derogatory comments about a journalist and his inquiry about the suitability of a “self-respecting man” getting involved with her.

In a recent live discussion, things took an unexpected turn when PoliticsJOE reporter Ava Evans shared her perspective on calls for a minister for men, suggesting it might contribute to the ongoing cultural divide. This conversation unfolded during an episode of Politics Live on the BBC, where Evans joined comedian and commentator Geoff Norcott.

However, her remarks prompted a sharp response from Laurence Fox, host of his own show on GB News. Fox criticized Evans’ views and made controversial comments that ignited a storm of controversy. He was swiftly taken to task for his remarks, including a public apology from GB News for the “totally unacceptable” nature of his comments.

GB News later suspended Laurence Fox, pending an investigation into his comments. They expressed their commitment to formally apologize to Ava Evans for the incident.

Meanwhile, the debate started with Geoff Norcott discussing the serious issue of men’s mental health and the alarming fact that suicide remains the leading cause of death for men under 50. When the discussion veered toward the idea of a dedicated minister for men, Ava Evans shared her reservations, suggesting that it might contribute to further division in society. She later acknowledged her initial comments as “a little rash” and expressed her genuine interest in a minister focusing on young men’s mental health.

Laurence Fox’s controversial comments took place during his guest appearance on another GB News program, Dan Wootton Tonight. His remarks, which included offensive language and derogatory statements about Ava Evans, drew strong reactions and condemnation from viewers, including Ava Evans herself.

Host Dan Wootton, who was seen laughing during parts of Fox’s speech, later issued two apologies on social media, clarifying that he was not amused by the comments and acknowledging the inappropriateness of his initial reaction.

Laurence Fox defended his statements on social media, sharing a screenshot of a conversation with a GB News employee regarding the general nature of his comments before the appearance, although explicit language wasn’t specified.

The controversy has also caught the attention of Labour MP and shadow attorney general Emily Thornberry, who called on media regulator Ofcom to intervene, emphasizing the importance of not subjecting women to such abuse on British television.

Ofcom confirmed receiving “a number of complaints” about Fox’s comments and is currently evaluating them in accordance with its broadcasting rules.

Laurence Fox, initially known as an actor from ITV’s detective series Lewis, has transitioned into a role as a right-wing political commentator and activist in recent years. In 2020, he launched the Reclaim Party, and his bid for London mayor in 2021 resulted in a sixth-place finish with 1.9% of the vote.
