Security footage captured the suspect strolling down the sidewalk, brandishing an empty cardboard box and concealing their identity behind a Donald Trump mask. As they reached the store’s entrance, chaos erupted.
The suspect first unleashed bear spray on a man sitting outside, then darted into the shop, intent on pillaging the store. The surveillance video shows the suspect using a hammer to shatter display cases, while the brave family members, who co-own the store, sprang into action to thwart the robbery. In the midst of the struggle, the suspect resorted to more bear spray, dousing the family.
However, these determined owners weren’t about to give in. They fought back valiantly, wielding what seemed to be a stick to defend themselves and trying to wrestle the intruder to the ground. The intense confrontation eventually led to the suspect losing their shirt and fleeing the store, empty-handed. Despite their efforts, the suspect, who had visited the store three weeks prior, remains at large.
When questioned about their willingness to risk personal harm in order to protect their livelihood, one family member, who chose to remain anonymous, expressed their sentiments, saying, “We worked so hard for it. We used to work day and night – and just to have someone come and snatch your stuff – it’s simply not fair.”
This incident is part of a concerning trend of smash-and-grab robberies plaguing Southern California businesses. Just last week, a jewelry store in Pasadena fell victim to a group of smash-and-grabbers who made off with a staggering $500,000 worth of jewelry in broad daylight.
Samuel Babikian, the owner of Jewels on Lake, who has been in the business for nearly five decades, recounted how masked assailants pepper-sprayed him before ruthlessly smashing display cases and fleeing within minutes. Overwhelmed by the loss, Babikian voiced his despair, saying, “I don’t know what I would do tomorrow morning. I don’t know if I should come to the store. I don’t know; I really don’t know what I am going to be doing because this was my life, this is the place that provided for my family.”
“It’s not right,” he added with a heavy heart. “In a second, they can come and destroy your life.”
