Early Saturday, sirens blared across southern and central Israel as a series of coordinated attacks struck the region, surpassing the scale of any in recent memory.
Israel found itself in a state of conflict with Gaza as Palestinian militants unleashed a barrage of rockets onto southern and central Israeli territories in an unexpected morning assault, marking one of the largest attacks from Gaza in years. The Israeli military reported that armed individuals breached the border fence at multiple locations and infiltrated Israeli communities.
Tragically, at least one woman lost her life in the initial rocket attacks, according to Israel’s ambulance service.
This assault commenced abruptly at approximately 6:30 a.m. on the Jewish Sabbath, coinciding with a significant festival, marking nearly half a century since the shocking 1973 war. This war began with a surprise attack by Egyptian and Syrian forces on Israel’s northern and southern borders, leaving a lasting impact on the nation’s collective memory.
In the first hour of the attack, a relentless barrage of rockets struck Israeli towns and cities, reaching as far north as Rishon LeZion, approximately 10 miles south of Tel Aviv, and Ramla, in close proximity to Israel’s international airport. By 8:15 a.m., sirens were also heard in central Jerusalem, accompanied by loud explosions.
Television broadcasts displayed unverified images of armed individuals in a pickup truck firing within an Israeli community, as well as at least one hang-glider in the sky. Reports from Israeli media indicated that the militants who breached the Israeli border were heavily armed.

The Israeli military attributed the assault to Hamas, the militant organization governing the Gaza Strip, a poverty-stricken coastal region that has been subject to an Israeli and Egyptian blockade for roughly 15 years. In a statement, the Israeli military declared, “The Hamas terrorist organization will face severe consequences for its actions.”
The military wing of Hamas, Al Qassam Brigades, stated that the military operation was launched “in defense of the Aqsa mosque,” a highly disputed holy site in Jerusalem that has seen a significant influx of Jewish visitors in recent weeks. The operation also aimed to challenge the Israeli blockade.
Magen David Adom, the ambulance service, issued an urgent appeal for blood donations and organized a special blood donation drive at a hospital in central Tel Aviv..
