Troubleshooting iPhone 15 Pro Charging Woes: Unraveling the USB-C Quandary

Experienced issues when charging your fresh iPhone 15 Pro with a power bank, only to discover it completely drained later? You’re part of a common experience! Here’s what’s happening.

The transition from Apple’s exclusive Lightning port to USB-C isn’t seamless for everyone, as a number of users are encountering charging difficulties.

The Problem

A recent incident on Reddit involves an iPhone 15 Pro owner who attempted to charge their phone using an Anker power bank. Instead of the iPhone’s battery charging, it was the power bank that received a charge.

This isn’t the expected behavior. Anker suggests a solution: charge the iPhone using the power bank’s USB-A port.

Why is this happening?

The iPhone 15 series offers a handy feature – the ability to reverse charge other Apple devices like Apple Watch, AirPods, or another iPhone using a USB-C cable. That’s the intended function, but something is causing this unexpected behavior. There’s even a report of an iPhone attempting to charge an iPad Pro through a USB-C cable. Interestingly, reversing the cable roles enabled the iPad Pro to charge the iPhone.

What could be the root cause?

While it’s tempting to lay blame on Apple, the source of this issue is more intricate. One might assume that USB-C is a universal standard adhered to by all manufacturers.

The connectors on these cables may fit into the ports, but beneath the surface, the consumer landscape of USB-C is a complex mix of old and new standards. It comprises a multitude of cables, chargers, power banks, and other accessories that may “function” with USB-C but exhibit varying degrees of adherence to the standards.

Frankly, I’m not surprised. Apple transitioned from a tightly controlled proprietary connector to one that, in theory, should adhere to stringent standards but falls short in practice.

What’s the way forward?

Apple should either enhance the iPhone 15’s ability to discern what it should charge or introduce a software switch to control the direction of the charge flow. I anticipate that Apple will address this issue with a patch in the near future.

In the interim, if you’re experiencing this problem, you might experiment with various power banks and cables, or consider reversing the cable direction. It may sound unusual, but while this might be new for iPhone users, I’ve encountered similar situations with certain Android devices and specific combinations of charging equipment in the past.
