Governor Ron DeSantis has taken a proactive step in safeguarding Florida by declaring a state of emergency for 33 counties.

This action comes as the state braces itself for the potential impact of a tropical storm that could be headed its way.

According to the experts at the National Hurricane Center (NHC), a large area of low pressure has formed off the west coast of Central America. This weather system is expected to gradually gain strength and organization as it travels northward over the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico.

The meteorologists predict that the disturbance, known as Invest 93L, will likely evolve into a tropical depression over the weekend. As it continues to progress northward into the eastern Gulf of Mexico, it could potentially affect various parts of Florida’s Gulf Coast. There’s even a possibility that areas still recovering from the impact of previous hurricanes like lan and Nicole might experience its effects as early as Tuesday.

The NHC’s 8 a.m. weather advisory out of Miami outlined several potential hazards posed by this developing weather system. These include the risk of dangerous storm surges, heavy rainfall leading to flash flooding, strong winds, and even the chance of isolated tornadic activity. The Florida Big Bend region and sections of the Gulf Coast are particularly identified as areas under this threat.

The situation demands swift and prudent precautions to ensure the safety of communities in the possible path of Invest 93L. This could involve moving individuals, equipment, and essential supplies, especially in areas that are still in the process of recovering from the previous impacts of hurricanes lan and Nicole.

Governor DeSantis’ state of emergency encompasses 33 out of Florida’s 67 counties. He stated in his order, “Because of the foregoing conditions, which are projected to constitute a major disaster, I declare that a state of emergency exists.” The affected counties include:

Alachua County
Bay County
Calhoun County
Charlotte County
Citrus County
Columbia County
DeSoto County
Dixie County
Franklin County
Gadsden County
Gilchrist County
Gulf County
Hamilton County
Hardee County
Hernando County
Hillsborough County
Jefferson County
Lafayette County
Lee County
Leon County
Levy County
Liberty County
Madison County
Manatee County
Marion County
Pasco County
Pinellas County
Polk County
Sarasota County
Sumter County
Suwannee County
Taylor County
Wakulla County
The governor’s declaration underscores the seriousness of the situation and the need for preparedness. In times like these, accurate weather information is crucial. Organizations like the NHC, along with sophisticated weather tracking systems, weather models, and timely weather alerts, work collaboratively to provide accurate and up-to-date weather forecasts.

As we navigate the unpredictable weather patterns of hurricane season, it’s imperative to remain vigilant and informed. The potential impacts of weather systems like Invest 93L underscore the importance of weather predictions and monitoring. By staying attuned to weather warnings and being well-prepared, we can ensure our safety and minimize the impact of these natural phenomena on our communities, especially in regions like Tampa Bay that are historically vulnerable to such events.
