Spectacular Explosives Drop Historic Missouri River Bridge as Onlookers Watch

The Rocheport Bridge over I-70 is demolished

Explosives Ignite Spectacular Transformation of Missouri River Bridge

Spectators, both in person and online, were in for a bit of a wait as they eagerly anticipated the dramatic demolition of a historic steel trestle bridge over the Missouri River that once served as a vital link for cars traveling along I-70.

The explosive spectacle, scheduled to unfold just southeast of Rocheport, Missouri, approximately 115 miles (185.07 kilometers) east of Kansas City, was briefly postponed due to a thick morning fog on Sunday. Initially set for 7:30 a.m., the demolition event didn’t kick off until just before 9 a.m., once the weather conditions had improved and visibility was no longer an issue.

On the banks of the majestic Missouri River, a small but enthusiastic crowd gathered to witness the breathtaking destruction unfold before their eyes. Some spectators inadvertently blocked the livestream feed operated by the Missouri Department of Transportation, but that didn’t dampen the excitement. Scores of viewers from across the nation also tuned in online to witness the momentous event. The livestream feed eventually switched to a wide-angle shot, capturing the entire bridge just moments before the explosives were triggered.

State officials promptly announced that crews would swing into action to clear the river of the remnants of the bridge, which stretched an impressive 1,100 feet (335 meters) across the waterway. This swift removal was necessary to reopen the channel for boat and barge traffic, a vital transportation artery.

Motorists traveling along Interstate 70 had already been rerouted onto a new westbound bridge earlier in the summer. However, for the duration of Sunday’s demolition, the bustling highway was temporarily closed off to ensure everyone’s safety. Excitement is brewing as construction on a brand-new $220 million bridge is well underway, with an anticipated completion date set for December 2024. This marks a significant step forward in the ongoing evolution of the I-70 corridor.
