Escaping Custody: The Alert that Sent GW Campus into Shelter-in-Place Mode

A startling incident unfolded at The George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C. on a Wednesday afternoon, leaving both the campus and local authorities on high alert. A murder suspect, identified as 31-year-old Christopher Haynes, managed to escape police custody at approximately 3:38 p.m., setting off a flurry of concerns that prompted a shelter-in-place advisory for the George Washington University campus.

Christopher Haynes, described as a Black man sporting shoulder-length dreadlocks, was seen wearing a distinctive white suit with a single red shoe. Notably, he was not handcuffed at the time of his escape. Haynes stands at 6 feet tall and weighs around 205 pounds. It’s worth noting that beneath his white suit, he had on a black T-shirt and gray shorts.

In light of this alarming situation, the D.C. police issued a clear directive to the public: “Do not engage; call 911 if spotted.” This cautionary message underscores the seriousness of the situation and the importance of prioritizing safety above all else.

The George Washington University’s student alert system sprang into action, urging members of the campus community to remain sheltered in place. The reason for this precaution was the presence of a dangerous individual in close proximity to the GW campus, further heightening the sense of urgency and concern.

In a subsequent news release issued by the D.C. police, it was clarified that Christopher Haynes is, in fact, 30 years old. He had been arrested earlier on that fateful Wednesday and charged with a homicide offense, making his escape all the more troubling.
