In Southwest Washington, 5 shot one fatally, near waterfront.

Five people shot in Southwest DC

A tragic incident unfolded on Tuesday afternoon in Southwest Washington, D.C., when a burst of gunfire erupted inside a residential building near the scenic waterfront.

According to a statement from Assistant Police Chief Carlos Heraud, one man tragically lost his life in the shooting, while four others sustained injuries.

The shocking incident occurred within the confines of a residence located in the 200 block of M Street SW, sending shockwaves through the community. Assistant Police Chief Carlos Heraud shared some preliminary details with the gathered media near the scene.

Following reports of gunshots, officers swiftly responded to the scene. There, they discovered the lifeless body of the deceased individual and one of the wounded men. The injured man was promptly rushed to a nearby hospital, and thankfully, his injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

Three additional men, also victims of the M Street incident, made their way to hospitals through private means to seek medical attention for their non-life-threatening wounds, as confirmed by Heraud. Additionally, a sixth individual, somehow linked to the incident, was found at the scene with an injury stemming from a fall.

It was revealed that all of the victims had some form of connection to each other, though no specific details about their relationships were provided during Heraud’s statement.

Crucially, the police official’s statement did not shed any light on potential suspects or motives behind the deadly shooting. As of the briefing, law enforcement had no leads or lookout for any suspects involved in this tragedy.

The incident unfolded in a prominent area, situated east of the Washington Channel and nestled between the Waterfront Metro station and the First District headquarters of the D.C. Police, both situated on M Street SW. Nationals Park, where the Washington Nationals were scheduled to face the New York Mets that Tuesday night, was approximately half a mile southeast of the location where the shooting occurred.

D.C. Council member Charles Allen, representing Ward 6, which encompasses the shooting site, expressed his understanding that the incident was confined to a single unit within the apartment building. In a statement, he called for a collective and urgent effort to combat gun violence at all levels of government in the city.

In the wake of the shooting, law enforcement authorities took the precautionary step of shutting down the eastbound lanes of M Street SW between Fourth Street and Delaware Avenue, near the baseball park. This disruption affected traffic in the area, as M Street is a major commuter route for locals and visitors alike.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the Southwest Waterfront community, and as the investigation continues, the city remains on edge, awaiting further developments in this tragic case.
