Tragedy Strikes as School Bus Crash in Clark County Leaves One Student Dead and Dozens Injured

In a heart-wrenching incident that unfolded on Tuesday morning, a school bus crash in Clark County resulted in the loss of one student’s life and left more than 20 other students injured.

The grim news was confirmed by Sgt. Tyler Ross from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, who provided the details of the distressing event.

The incident occurred around 8:15 a.m. when a school bus from Northwestern Local Schools was on its westbound route along Troy Road, which doubles as state route 41. Simultaneously, a 2010 Honda Odyssey was traveling in the opposite direction on SR-41, eastbound. Tragically, the Honda Odyssey veered across the center lane into the path of the school bus, as Sgt. Ross explained.

Even though the school bus driver attempted to maneuver onto the shoulder in an effort to avoid the collision, contact between the two vehicles was still made. This unfortunate impact caused the school bus to veer off the right side of the road and overturn. The Honda Odyssey also ended up off the road, coming to a halt nearby.

Sgt. Ross reported that there were a total of 52 children aboard the school bus, in addition to the driver. Emergency response teams sprang into action, with 13 students being swiftly transported to area hospitals by medics for immediate treatment. Another 10 students were taken to hospitals by their families. Fortunately, it appears that 22 of the students have sustained non-life threatening injuries, while one student’s injuries are of a more serious nature.

Tragically, one student’s injuries proved fatal, as they were ejected from the bus during the collision, Sgt. Ross somberly noted.

The driver of the Honda Odyssey was identified as Hermanio Joseph, 35, of Springfield. He and his passenger, Roberto Mompremier, 37, also of Springfield, were taken to Springfield Regional Medical Center for treatment. Thankfully, their injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Alfred E. Collier, 68, of Springfield, was behind the wheel of the school bus. He suffered minor injuries in the crash but did not require hospitalization.

As investigators continue to piece together the sequence of events leading up to the tragedy, the school district took to social media to announce that they would adhere to their regular dismissal times for students.

This heart-wrenching incident has left the community reeling, and local authorities and healthcare facilities have acted promptly. Dayton Children’s Hospital confirmed their readiness to receive patients, and the Greater Dayton Area Hospital Association enacted its mass casualty protocol. Dayton Children’s emergency department attended to 22 children impacted by the accident, some arriving by ambulance while others were brought by their parents. Additionally, the Kettering Health Springfield Emergency Center tended to six patients from the crash.

In the wake of this sorrowful incident, Northwestern Local Schools conveyed their condolences and acknowledged the bus accident on one of their elementary routes. As the community mourns the loss of one young life and hopes for the swift recovery of the injured, the investigation into the crash continues to unfold.
