Tragic High School Football Game Shooting: 1 Teen Dead, 4 Injured in Choctaw, Oklahoma Chaos
A heart-wrenching incident unfolded at a high school football game in Choctaw, Oklahoma, leaving a 16-year-old boy dead and four others injured due to gunfire.
The shocking episode occurred during the intense rivalry game between Choctaw High School and Del City High School at Bill Jensen Field.
According to information released by the Choctaw Police Department, the unfortunate event took place during the third quarter of the game. The shots echoed on the visitor’s side of the stadium, plunging the scene into chaos. Authorities believe that an argument between at least two males escalated, tragically resulting in multiple gunshots being fired.
Tragically, the young 16-year-old who was hit by the gunfire lost his life, despite the valiant lifesaving efforts made by school officials, including Choctaw Superintendent David Reid, Choctaw Safety Coordinator Steve Keiffer, and Steve’s brother, a trauma surgeon. This loss has left a community grieving and grappling with the harsh reality of such senseless violence.
Among the other victims, a 42-year-old man endured a gunshot wound to his chest. Swiftly taken to a hospital, he underwent surgery and is currently in stable condition, according to the police. Additionally, a woman suffered a gunshot wound to her thigh, while two female students faced fractures in their wrists and a leg as they tried to flee the chaotic scene.
It’s worth noting that the tragic incident unfolded at a time when emotions were running high during this rivalry game between Choctaw High School and Del City High School. The competitive spirit that usually fuels these games was abruptly replaced by shock and concern for everyone’s safety.
The authorities were quick to respond to the harrowing situation. The Choctaw School District had a robust police presence with five Choctaw officers on duty for every home game. On the night of the incident, all five officers were present, along with two on-duty Choctaw officers who had stopped by, as well as two Del City officers.
In a further development, a Del City officer discharged their firearm at the scene. As the investigation unfolds, it’s the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office that will take the lead in determining the exact sequence of events and the circumstances surrounding the tragic shooting.
