The Belgian Federal Prosecutor’s Office officially verified on Tuesday that the identity of the suspect, though unconfirmed at this time, has been extinguished.

As reported earlier by the public broadcaster RTBF, the suspect met his demise during a police operation on Tuesday morning within the Cage aux Ours district, situated in the Schaerbeek municipality, northeast of the capital city of Brussels. According to RTBF, he was found in possession of a firearm at the time of the encounter.

The assailant’s lethal attack on Monday evening coincided with Belgium hosting Sweden in a Euro 2024 qualifying soccer match at the King Baudouin Stadium, situated approximately 3 miles (5 kilometers) from downtown Brussels. This unfortunate incident resulted in the game being abruptly called off at halftime.

Subsequently, the stadium had to be cleared, and spectators were instructed by the National Crisis Center to promptly depart and head home.

In a video shared on social media, an individual who identified himself as the perpetrator professed to be “inspired by the Islamic State.” The spokesperson for Belgium’s federal prosecutor’s office disclosed that the “Swedish nationality of the victims was mentioned as a probable motivation for the act.”

During a press conference, spokesperson Eric Van Duyse stated, “At this juncture, there are no indications of a potential connection to the Israeli-Palestinian situation. Nevertheless, in response to both the established facts and the claimed motive, immediate security measures have been put in place to safeguard Swedish supporters to the best extent possible.”

This tragic shooting incident follows a series of Quran-burning protests in Sweden and Denmark, which triggered heated demonstrations in Muslim-majority nations, raised concerns about security, and led both Scandinavian countries to contemplate a review of their liberal freedom of speech laws.

Belgian officials strongly denounced the assault.
