Alyssa Nakken: The Trailblazer Making Waves in MLB’s Managerial Realm

Alyssa Nakken, known for her historic role as the first woman to coach on the field during a major league game, is now setting her sights on a different challenge. She recently interviewed for the Giants’ managerial vacancy, as confirmed by President of Baseball Operations, Farhan Zaidi.

In a significant step forward for gender equality in Major League Baseball (MLB), Nakken made her mark in April 2022 when she worked at first base during a San Francisco Giants game. This groundbreaking moment was a testament to her dedication and the Giants’ commitment to diversity and inclusion.

News of Nakken’s interview for the managerial position came to light through a report by The Athletic, highlighting the potential for her to continue breaking barriers in the sport. Her journey in baseball took a personal turn when her husband, Robert, shared the joyous news of their forthcoming addition to the family: a baby girl due on February 9.

Zaidi has expressed his intent to hire a new manager before the start of free agency, following the departure of Gabe Kapler. Kapler, with a record of 295 wins and 248 losses over three-plus seasons, led the Giants to a remarkable franchise-record 107 wins in 2021, clinching the NL West title against the formidable 106-win Dodgers. However, the team missed the playoffs in the two subsequent seasons, which led to his departure.

The Giants finished the 2023 season with a record of 79-83, following their 81-81 performance in 2022. Their offense struggled in the final stretch, scoring two or fewer runs in each of the last eight games.

Alyssa Nakken, at the age of 33, is already a notable figure in baseball. She was a standout softball player at Sacramento State from 2009 to 2012, earning three-time all-conference honors. Her dedication to both her sport and academics resulted in her being recognized as a four-time Academic All-American. Following her collegiate success, she pursued a master’s degree in sport management from the University of San Francisco, solidifying her commitment to the game.

Her journey into MLB began in January 2020 when Kapler hired her as a coach on the Giants’ staff. Her experience on the field and in the dugout has made her an invaluable asset to the team.

Alyssa Nakken’s story is one of a trailblazer, a full-time woman coach who broke down barriers by making her on-field coaching debut. Her journey and accomplishments have undoubtedly inspired countless individuals, both within and beyond the world of baseball. Her interview for the Giants’ managerial position reflects not only her talent but also the changing landscape of the sport, where diversity and inclusion continue to make strides.

As the Giants embark on the search for their new manager, Alyssa Nakken stands as a symbol of progress and a testament to the idea that anyone, regardless of gender, can excel in the world of professional baseball. Her impact has resonated with fans, players, and fellow coaches alike, making her a symbol of hope and possibility in the game.
